A prime number is a whole number greater than one (1) that cannot be divided by any whole number except itself and the number 1.

Legend:

A natural number greater than 1 that is not prime is called a composite number. For example, 5 is prime because the only ways of writing it as a product, 1 × 5 or 5 × 1, involve 5 itself. The smallest composite number is 4, because 2 x 2 = 4. 1 is not a composite number. Every other number is a prime number. The smallest prime number is 2. The next prime numbers are 3, 5, 7, 11, and 13. There is no largest prime number.
